i have just got a xbox 360 for christmas and have just recently gone bak to uni but cant connect to xbox live. i currently have a wired internet connection with needs a password to access on my laptop any ideas on what i need to buy or do?How can i connect to xbox live at student halls accomadation at uni?
More information would be helpful. Explain exactly HOW you are currently connected to the internet with your laptop at this moment in time.
Tell me about all the wires starting with the ones coming from the wall and what each wire is and what it plugs in to. I'd also like to know the model of your modem and router (if you have one).

NEW: That sounds like it could be a problem. I will assume the cable you mentioned is an ethernet cord. I take it that you have already tried connecting it to the xbox 360 and tried to go online with it but it didn't work?

You most likely can't. Most universities block services like Xbox Live and the PSN because they pull down the connection for the entire school. Also, they don't want you playing instead of working on your studies. Make sure you check with your school's rules on such services as most have it written somewhere that you can't use them. If you try to and they find out (which they can and will), you may put your school life at risk and Live is not worth messing up your education.
If you want to play against other people, I suggest setting up a group or play night for your dorm. Tons of people usually join these things as it's a good way to break from studying and have a little fun.
