Buy the xbox 360 wi fi adapter. It will have the steps to install and set up.

i personally have my xbox 360 running through a router, but that is only because i am spreading internet throughout the house wireless.
What you can do, works for me, is get a cable line(don't know the exact name) and run it straight from the xbox into your computer..it should work.
If not, you can make sure that the internet provider is enabled to allow internet sharing, if it isn't and you enabled it, I'm out of idea. Same if it is already enabled.
